Krabi – Southern Thailand
Krabi actually refers to the entire province in Southern Thailand and when people say that they are going to “Krabi” it usually means that they are visiting one of three destinations; Krabi town, Ao Nang or Railay although Koh Lanta is also within the province as well as other quieter (aka up-coming) beach destinations for those seeking to escape the maddening crowds and find their own piece of paradise.
Home to arguably the best beaches in Asia and with beaches and islands sprinkled like 100’s & 1,000’s off its coastline, Krabi province lends itself to family travel whilst also providing plenty of intrigue and challenge for enthusiasts, not least rock climbers and scuba divers. Indulge in island hopping day trips, learn to dive or learn to rock climb in what is certainly one of the best places in the world to do so:
“Climbing is my passion, and over the past decade, I’ve climbed on every continent bar Antarctica. Without a doubt, the Railay Beach area cannot be beaten”. Learning to Rock Climb in Thailand, Steve Backshall, The Sunday Times, April 12, 2009.
Krabi Town is a seaport known for bargain accommodation and great food but more for Krabi Airport which sits on its outskirts and is as close to Krabi Town as most visitors get.
Not far away is Ao Nang which has become a tourist town but not to be dismissed particularly if you have children in your party that need entertaining and a range of things to do. Being based in Ao Nang has the advantage of being able to do what you want to do when you want to do it; you are not stranded. You can spend days island hopping or head inland for a total change of scene and in the evenings you have numerous restaurants to choose from and shopping as well all be it rather touristy.
A little further down the coast and accessible only by boat are Tonsai and the world famous Railay, world famous that is among the ardent rock climbing fraternity who scale the spectacular limestone edifices that encircle the bay.
While a play ground for more experienced rock climbers, the Railay area of Krabi is also an ideal destination to learn rock climbing even if you have never done it before and find heights less than endearing. There are several rock climbing courses and schools in Railay and as Steve Backshall said in his article, you will learn more here in less than 5 days than you would in a year on a climbing wall: “The western beaches of Krabi . . . are the best place in the world to learn to rock climb”.
